Uncle, nephew who died at sea in Lark Harbour tragedy remembered
Two generations of a family were lost after a boat capsized on Newfoundland’s west coast this weekend, leaving a community in mourning. On Sunday morning, after a vessel carrying six people capsized, the Canadian Coast Guard ship Cape Edensaw was dispatched from Lark Harbour to the west coast. The coast guard launched a fast rescue craft into the water, recovering two bodies. They were Trevor Childs and his nephew Nicholas Skinner, says Fish, Food & Allied Workers secretary-treasurer Jason Spingle. ‘It doesn’t feel real,’ says Lark Harbour deputy mayor following death of 2 fishermen
The Newfoundland community of Lark Harbour has been rocked by the deaths of two fishermen, who died after a boat capsized Sunday. The Canadian Coast Guard ship Cape Edensaw was dispatched from Lark Harbour on Sunday to the rugged shoreline of Newfoundland’s west coast and launched a fast rescue craft into the water. The crew soon recovered the two bodies and spotted four survivors on the shoreline. Lark Harbour Deputy Mayor Ria MacDonald said much of the town found out near lunchtime on Sunday. “‘Reeling’ is the only word to really use. Nobody expects to lose anyone, let alone on the first day of the season.… And the way it went down, from what I understand, is devastating,” MacDonald said Monday. RCMP dog Axel apprehends man responsible for theft of fishing vessel
An RCMP dog caught a suspect accused of stealing a fishing vessel in Lark Harbour on the province’s west coast. Thursday around 8:40 p.m., RCMP in Corner Brook were called out to the scene and found the ropes that were attached to the vessel had been cut. It was unknown if anyone was on board the vessel. A motor vehicle that had been reported stolen to the RNC in Corner Brook earlier that day was found in the area. RCMP police dog services and officers from Corner Brook and Deer Lake Detachment attended the scene with Department of Fisheries. A 31-year-old man was apprehended by police dog Axel, and taken into custody and treated for his injuries. >click to read<16:15
Storm damages fishing boat, raises Holy Hell in western Newfoundland
High winds tore through a home in Lark Harbour, Nfld. on Friday, ripping off the roof and leaving the building in shambles. The RCMP said Friday night the community was experiencing “hurricane force winds,” and warned residents to stay inside. “High winds are blowing large pieces of debris through the air,” the RCMP wrote in a news release at about 8:30 p.m. Friday. “[We ask] people not travel to the area as it’s proving unsafe to do so.” A fishing boat that was featured in Discovery Canada’s Cold Water Cowboys reality series was heavily damaged during severe weather in Port Saunders, on Newfoundland’s west coast. Conway Caines’s fishing vessel, called Sea Doo, was washed into the beach after high tides and heavy winds caused it to break away from a wharf Friday afternoon. That’s exactly what happened in Lark Harbour, the small community at the end of the south shore of the Bay of Islands, on Thursday evening. Hours earlier one man lost his life and three others were rescued after the boat they were in capsized while crab fishing near Little Port. Read more here 14:30
