Famous boat now calls the Crystal Coast home

The Cricket II was built in 1947 for Captain Frank Mundus who in 1978 Newsweek magazine was called “the most celebrated shark fisherman in the world.” Mundus fished out of Montauk, N.Y. for 50 years, specializing in the hunt for sharks, in particular great white sharks. It was no coincidence that the “Jaws” character, Capt. Quint, bore much resemblance to the real-life Capt. Mundus. Capt. Joe DiBella of Morehead City has quite a history with the Cricket II. Joe says, “My history with the Cricket II began when I was 8 years old. I fished on the Cricket II out of Montauk, N.Y. with my father and first captain Frank Mundus.” >click to read< 10:31

Connecticut delegation wants state to have input on proposed fishing rules

The state’s congressional delegation has sent a letter to a congressional subcommittee requesting that be allowed to testify on a proposed bill that would transfer 150 square miles of federal fishing grounds to the control of Rhode Island and New York. The legislation would move the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in Long Island Sound to a new landward boundary between Montauk, N.Y., and Point Judith, R.I. New York Rep. Lee Zeldin introduced the bill which was aimed at striped bass management. The subcommittee is slated to hold a hearing on the bill Tuesday. Read the rest here 11:17

Coast Guard medically evacuates ailing F/V Raiders crewmember 50 miles south of Moriches, N.Y., today

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard medically evacuated an ailing crewmember from the fishing vessel Raiders 50 miles south of Moriches, N.Y., today. A communications watchstander at Coast Guard Sector New York, in Staten Island, N.Y., received notification from the fishing vessel that a crewmember was in need of immediate medical treatment. A Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended the medical evacuation due to the nature of the crewmember’s life-threatening condition. A helicopter rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod in Cape Cod, Mass., conducted the medical evacuation and transferred the crewmember to Providence Hospital. uscgnews 14:05

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
