Fishing industry welcomes move as WA government puts proposed legislation on ice
New fishing laws a decade in the making have been put on hold by the Western Australian government just months before they are due to come into force. The Aquatic Resources Management Act (ARMA) was to be governing legislation for the recreational and commercial fishing industries, replacing the 1994 Fish Resources Management Act and the Pearling Act 1990. It was due for enactment on November 1. However, mid-last month, the government told the industry it would be delayed indefinitely. Cuomo hits hold button on commercial fishing license reform plan
Andrew Cuomo on Thursday said the state would hit the pause button on a planed overhaul of the commercial fishing licensing system, saying regulators need more information, and input to get it right. The state two years ago hired an outside expert to review the system for issuing commercial fishing permits, and come up with a list of recommendations for fixing a system many fishermen consider broken. Next Round of Right Whale Meetings On Hold – Revised Schedule Will be Sent When Available
Dear Lobster Industry Member, Last week, DMR sent a notice that the Lobster Zone Council meetings scheduled for the current week had been postponed. At this time, DMR is advising the industry that the entire schedule of meetings is currently on hold. The Commissioner regrets the delays but wants to ensure that we develop a proposal for submission to NMFS that reflects a thorough review of all data.
