Scottish fishing chiefs lash out over conservation group Oceana’s ‘fake news’
The Aberdeen-based Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) has accused conservation group Oceana of spreading “fake news”. Oceana is today publishing a report calling for a “legally binding deadline to end overfishing”. And it claims to have the backing of nearly eight in 10 adults in Britain for stricter limits on catches in UK waters. According to Oceana, which also wants to see a ban on supertrawlers more than 100m (328ft) long, half the UK’s key fish 
populations were “overfished or critically low” last year. SFF’s top team believe the conservation group’s latest report is designed to disrupt annual negotiations of overfishing quotas for 2025. Oceana is “wasting everyone’s time with a series of cherry-picked statements, reliance on obsolete science and creative wording to perpetuate a narrative of gloom and doom about fisheries that bears little relation to reality”, the fishing industry body explained. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 20:01
The bomb-hunters scouring UK waters for unexploded weapons
“We are finding unexploded ordnance and dealing with it on a daily basis,” Mr Gooderham says. “There are many that we don’t know about.” Despite being dropped – or dumped – decades ago, unexploded ordnance (UXO) continues to pose a very real danger to those working in our waters. “The real problem is when fishing vessels and dredgers encounter unexploded ordnance,” says Mr Gooderham. “That is when it becomes dangerous.” In 2020, fishing vessel Galwad-Y-Mor was thrown into the air when a World War Two bomb exploded 25 miles (40km) north of Cromer, Norfolk. ‘Betrayal’! Fishermen warned UK waters could be used as ‘bargaining chips’ in Brexit talks
The British Government have insisted that once the UK leaves the European Union, Britain will leave the Common Fisheries Policy. Speaking in the House of Commons in PMQs the Prime Minister confirmed the UK will be leaving the policy after Brexit, but did not make clear what would happen during the planned two-year implementation period. Queen’s Speech: Access and management of UK waters to return to British fishermen
A fisheries bill will be introduced to enable the UK to set its own quotas from the point of Brexit. The government’s programme also includes an agricultural bill to “provide stability to farmers as we leave the EU”. This will set out measures to ensure an alternative system is in place to support the sector as the UK leaves the Common Agricultural Policy. Much of the Queen’s Speech, the first by a minority government for 40 years, is focused on preparing for the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. click here to read the story 10:27
Spanish fish barons admit taking illegal catches in UK waters
Two companies run by Spanish fishing tycoons are set to receive one of the largest ever fines for illegal fishing – expected to be more than £1m – when they appear in a British court this week. Manuel Vidal Suarez and Maria Dolores Vidal Marino, from Galicia, Spain, together with two fishermen who served on their boats, will appear at Truro Crown Court, Cornwall, on Wednesday, following charges against their companies that they “recklessly furnished false information” – falsified log books and landing declarations to hide the amount of fish their boats had caught in UK waters.
