The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet
NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. And a happy belated Thanksgiving to the good folks at Fishery Nation. Thank you all so much for what you have done , and what you continue to do on behalf of this industry throughout the nation and around the world.
You folks are the only one as far as I can see who genuinely support commercial fishermen and the industry. Unafraid to keep us informed with both the good and the bad.
Without you we would be beholden to those who claim to be friends of the industry while speaking out of one side of their mouths, yet supporting policies that they know are crippling us.
National publications that have been around for a long time that spit in the faces of those they once stood along side. Shame on them and what appears to be a decision based on greed rather than what’s right.
SHAME ON THEM!
Thank you, Joel, we were inspired by the good people we’ve met along the way, like in Gloucester when Fox came to town to talk about regulations that were strangling the groundfishery, and we’ve tried to inform people about the issues ever since on a daily basis! We’ve done pretty good with that!
