Vessel Review – Janneke – Versatile beamer/twin-rigger delivered to Dutch owner
Urk, Netherlands-based Werft Shipbuilding recently delivered a new trawler to local fisherman and skipper Jelle Hakvoort. Named Janneke after Hakvoort’s daughter, the Bureau Veritas-classed newbuild was designed by Dutch naval architecture firm Marimecs as a multi-functional vessel. The summer months will see it using twin-rig gear whereas beam gear will be employed during winter. Targeted species include squid, scallops, sole, langoustine, plaice, and turbot. Janneke has been registered to Belgium and will be operated out of Zeebrugge. This is because the owner believes that operating under the Belgian flag ensures that the vessel has access to a greater number of fishing grounds in areas such as the North Sea, the English Channel, the Irish Sea, and the Bay of Biscay. New trawler built in Urk
There was no doubt in Urk fisherman Jelle Hakvoort’s mind that he wanted to build his new trawler close to home. Urk co-operative VCU played a significant role in the construction of new multi-purpose fishing vessel Janneke Z-575, which has begun fishing with beam trawl gear. Urk company Werft Shipbuilding is the designer and has been the main contractor throughout – while VCU’s Albert Hartman has also been closely involved with the construction even before the order had been placed. Storm Doors and Zenith Trawl – a Perfect Match
When Whitehills skipper David Lovie took delivery in 2020 of the 34-metre trawler Endeavour V, he opted for a pair of Vónin’s Storm trawl doors. “The Storm doors have proven to be powerful, highly durable and robust. Unlike our previous doors that required replacement every 12 months, we were able to use these for a remarkable 31 months before considering a replacement. Last year he travelled to Hirtshals with Vónin to observe a variety of fishing gears streamed in the flume tank, and immediately liked the look of the Zenith groundfish trawl. Tersan Shipyard has signed a new contract for a second freezer stern trawler
The new vessel will be among the world’s largest purpose-built factory trawlers and will trawl Alaska pollock in the Sea of Okhotsk, as well as herring, mackerel and pollock in the Pacific. The vessel is arranged for pelagic and semi-pelagic trawling, using two main trawl winches working in combination with ice trawl gallows and four large pelagic sweep line drums.
