Crew safe after fishing boat stranded on Newfoundland’s south coast

The Canadian Coast Guard confirmed Thursday morning that the crew of a fishing boat that ran aground off the coast of Fortune on Newfoundland’s south coast have been safely evacuated from the vessel. A fire broke out and was contained onboard a fishing vessel Wednesday afternoon, with all crew safe and accounted for, according to Canadian seafood company Ocean Choice International. The skipper and crew of a fishing boat disabled by high winds on the Grand Banks Monday night are happy to be back in port on Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. Skipper Les Fudge said he and his crew were aboard the Little Jack, about 120 miles from Burin, when the winds came up. The Coast Guard successfully coordinated the rescue of 42 people who abandoned ship when their caught fire approximately 1,800 miles south of the Hawaiian Islands, Wednesday. An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Barbers Point arrived on scene at 5:10 p.m. (HST), established communications with the fishing vessel’s crew and dropped a dewatering pump, flash lights and flares. Fong Seong 888, a Tuvalu-flagged oil tanker, arrived on scene at 5:30 p.m. (HST) to offer additional assistance. Gloucester F/V Terra Nova Sinks, Two Men Retrieved, then Tragedy

terra-nova-3BOSTON − Coast Guard crews rescued two male crew members after a commercial fishing vessel that was taking on water sank three miles east of Cape Ann, Mass., at approximately 10:30 p.m., Friday. The crew reported six feet of water in the forward cabin of the vessel and the onboard pumps were not able to keep up with the flooding.
