Mississippi: 93rd Annual Blessing of the Fleet welcomes the new shrimp season
Boats lined up alongside Deer Island celebrating the 93rd Annual Blessing of the Fleet. The annual blessing which promotes a successful and safe fishing season is a tradition in Biloxi. Michael Kovacevich remembers attending the ceremony as a young boy. “My family came from Croatia to Biloxi and like hundreds of others to work the seafood, so you know just about everybody in Biloxi can tie their past to seafood,” Kovacevich said. This year, the Shrimp King and Queen were on the blessing boat. King Joseph Powell said riding on the blessing boat brought him old memories of when he was a fisher. “It brings back old memories of the Mid 50′s when I was a shrimper and being on the boat. >click to read< 09:40
Lobstermen gather for foggy farewell to Andrew Gove
Dozens of lobster boats gathered off Greenhead on foggy Deer Island Thorofare Sunday morning to remember and pay tribute to “Uncle” Andrew Gove. A fisherman for 82 years, Gove retired from the sea last year at the age of 89 and died late last month at the age of 90. The fog was so thick Sunday morning that it was hard to tell exactly how many boats took part in the tribute, but one estimate was that as many as 50 were on hand. In addition to boats from Stonington, boats came from nearby harbors on the Blue Hill Peninsula and from as far away as Searsport, Vinalhaven and North Haven, home to many of Gove’s relatives. >click to read< 17:44

UPDATED!: Lobster plant on Deer Island catches fire overnight
Police in St. George are at the scene of a fire that broke out overnight on Deer Island that badly damaged a lobster plant. This is the second time a fire has broken out at the Paturel International facility over the past six months. In September, a fire destroyed a lobster tank house on the site. The tank house was a major part of lobster fishing on Deer Island. More to come… >link< 08:00
