North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission places emergency limits on Southern Flounder
After five hours of motions, amendments and haggling over details, the 
approved an emergency measure Thursday that will close down most fishing for southern flounder in the state’s sounds after Oct. 16. The restrictions, which are aimed at allowing larger numbers of fish to migrate into the ocean to reach spawning age, were deemed necessary by the Division of Marine Fisheries even though the usefulness of a 2014 stock assessment was challenged by a peer review. Trawlers defeat relief for halibut fishermen – Balk at Compensation
The emergency measure was opposed by the At-sea Processors Association, United Catcher Boats, and other industry groups. The failed emergency measure was part of the voting to set quotas for Bering Sea groundfish species, including the billion dollar pollock fishery. Trawlers feared that a reduction in halibut bycatch limits for trawlers could shut them down early, leaving their fish in the water. But halibut fishermen complain that the trawlers are allowed to waste more than they’ll be allowed to catch for the high-value market, a policy called “unacceptable” by St. Paul mayor Simeon Swetzof. In an “emergency” measure Maine Department of Marine Resources closes Cobscook Bay, other scallop fishing areas
“The department is concerned that further unrestricted harvesting during the remainder of the 2013-14 fishing season in these areas may deplete a severely diminished resource beyond its ability to recover,” DMR officials said in a prepared statement. “This is based upon industry feedback, sea & port sampling observations, Marine Patrol observations and available survey data.” Read more@BDN 10:53
