A Spanish fishing boat sank early Tuesday in rough seas off Newfoundland,,, The 50-meter (164-feet) long fishing boat named F/V Villa de Pitanxo, which operates out of northwest Spain’s Galicia region, sank in the dark (around 0600 GMT, 1 a.m. EST), Survivors include vessel’s 53-year-old skipper and his 42-year-old nephew, according to La Voz de Galicia newspaper. Search Underway for Crew of Spanish Fishing Trawler That Sank Off Newfoundland

International reports indicate a Spanish fishing trawler sank approximately 450 km off the east coast of Newfoundland in the early morning hours and a search is underway for the vessel’s crew. Spanish and American media are reporting that life rafts have been located and at least four people are dead. The Voice of Galicia is reporting that the Villa de Pitanxo, which sank shortly after midnight Newfoundland time, has a crew of 24, and while three survivors have been located, there are a number of fatalities. >click to read<

Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard launches Project СТ-192 freezer trawler for Russian Fishery Company (video)

On 23 June 2020, Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard (a company of United Shipbuilding Corporation) launched the first serial freezing trawler of Project СТ-192, Mekhanik Maslak, built for Russian Fishery Company,,,. RFC will get 11 ships of СТ-192 design including 10 trawlers to be built by Admiralteiskie Verfi  under the state programme of investment quotas. Each new vessel that will be built for the Russian Fishery Company is designed for an annual catch of about 60 thousand tons of fish. New Zealand: Safety training needed after man killed on trawler

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has recommended fishing company Sanford Limited introduce more safety training and has warned against the use of performance-impairing substances after an investigation into the death of a trawler freezerman. Steffan Antony Stewart, 26, of New Plymouth, who died after becoming trapped in a piece of machinery aboard the New Zealand-registered deep-sea factory trawler San Granit, had a level of methamphetamine in his system which meant it was likely consumed at sea, the review found. “Due to the varying effects this substance has on an individual, it was not possible to determine whether it contributed to the accident,” it says. >click to read< 14:15

British Columbia: Independent Seafoods Canada adds second vessel to base in Alberni Inlet

Independent Seafoods Canada Corporation (ISCC) owns the 56-metre (184-foot) Sunderoey, and says it will almost double employment by the time the new trawler is at full deployment. Independent Seafoods has moored the Raw Spirit at the Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) property since 2013, and has provided more than 50 direct local jobs to crew as well as 20 more onshore when the ship comes back from its offshore fishing grounds to offload. >click to read< 14:18
