Deadliest Catch’s F/V Aleutian Ballad comeback from 60ft ‘rogue wave’ capsize
The Aleutian Ballad is one of Deadliest Catch’s most memorable fishing vessels. Deadliest Catch’s F/V Aleutian Ballad was captained by Jerry ‘Corky’ Tilley. The Washington born captain was in charge of the boat when it was hit by a wave the size of a five-story building in season 2. The 107-foot-long welded steel crabber was capsized by the “rogue wave,” and exited the Discovery series. Speaking on Deadliest Catch, Captain Jerry said that the weather conditions were “unbelievable.” At 3 am, the Captain had to navigate the 100ft tall boat through 40ft seas and 60-mph winds before it was hit by a 60ft wave. “Deadliest Catch” boat Aleutian Ballad gifts a memorial pot and record-setting donations to Metlakatla in honor of those lost at sea
The crew of the former Deadliest Catch vessel-turned-tour boat Aleutian Ballad knows that time on the water is often dangerous. That’s why each year, they give a “memorial pot” to one coastal community impacted by accidents at sea. This year, the crew dedicated the memorial pot to Metlakatla. They were inspired by a recent documentary about Alaska’s only Native reserve. David Lethin is one of the Ballad’s captains. He said that each year, his crew looks for communities that have seen hardships related to fishing. The Aleutian Ballad was a crab boat for 23 years before it was converted into an industrial tourism ship.
