AMSEA Fishing vessel safety and drill course set for March 1 and 2 in Hawaii

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a two-day fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course March 1 and 2 at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, 726 S. Eliminate Bottomfish Restricted Fishing Areas in Hawaii, Western Pacific Regional Fishery Council Recommends

HONOLULU (21 October 2013) The State of Hawaii’s Bottomfish Restricted Fishing Areas (BRFAs) located in federal waters should be eliminated, according to the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council. Necropsy finds 5 fish hooks in dolphin in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — A rare dolphin found dead on a remote Hawaii beach earlier this month swallowed five fish hooks, but they apparently didn’t cause its death. A necropsy of the dolphin — called a false killer whale — showed the hooks were floating in its stomach along with the partially digested remains of a large marlin, some tuna and several types of squid. more@gosanangelo  11:05

Navy: Training, testing may kill hundreds of whales, dolphins and injure thousands

The studies were done ahead of the Navy applying to the National Marine Fisheries Service for permits for its activities. The Navy said that the studies focused on waters off the East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, Southern California and Hawaii from 2014 through 2019, the main areas that the service branch tests equipment and trains sailors. more@wapo 08:01

Scientists to investigate coral crisis on Kauai’s north shore

“The disease is a tissue-loss disease,” said USGS Wildlife Disease Specialist Thierry Work. “If you look at these corals, they are losing tissues and we think it’s associated with a cyanobacteria, which is a type of algae that is eating the coral basically.” “You are going to start to lose your fisheries and not to mention the tourist issue here,” Abey said. “Economically, it is critical for the state of Hawaii to maintain the coral reef resources in a healthy state.” continued
