Maryland DNR rescues trapped whale off shore of Ocean City

A trapped whale was rescued recently in the waters off Ocean City, thanks to officers from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Sgt. Andrew Wilson said he and his crew were on patrol near Ocean City on Oct. 24 when suddenly, a transmission came through: a whale spotted offshore was stuck and unable to get free. Upon discovering the animal, officers noticed its tail was entangled by two buoys and a fishing gear line, according to Wilson. >Video, click to read< 13:09

Blue crab stock healthy with above average abundance

Results from the latest Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey — conducted annually by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Maryland Department of Natural Resources — show the Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab stock remains healthy and able to support quality commercial and recreational harvests. The results — available due to months of field sampling and laboratory analysis by VIMS researchers Mike Seebo, Katie Knick, Gabby Saluta, Alison Smith, and colleagues at Maryland DNR — were announced by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and Maryland DNR leadership. >click to read<21:22

Striper Poaching Season Begins in Maryland!

On April 5, 2017, Maryland DNR reported that officers had charged nine men with possessing 87 striped bass from the waters of Dorchester County. On Saturday, an officer watched as four men caught striped bass and hid them in storm drains on Fishing Creek Bridge. The officer recovered 14 fish. Charged with possessing striped bass in a closed season were: Juan Manuel Bravo, 34, of Hyattsville; Emerson DeJesus Vargas Campos, 26, of Riverdale; Jairo Dario Ramierez, 22, of Upper Marlboro; and Elmer Antonio Castillo Araniva, 23, of Upper Marlboro. The next night, officers watched as five men from Prince George’s County caught fish and placed them in the trunk of an SUV. Maryland DNR forms position to give more voice to seafood industry

Former Queen Anne’s County commissioner and waterman George O’Donnell has been brought onto the Department of Natural Resources’ payroll as a seafood industry and fisheries stakeholders liaison, of sorts. O’Donnell has been in the position since July 8, and according to Maryland Watermen’s Association President Robert T. Brown, he’s already been working with the commercial industry to find solutions to their issues. “We’ve finally got a friend up there,” Brown said. Read the rest here 10:26
