Ice and weather causing problems for Northern Peninsula crab fishers

In a normal season fish harvester Ronald Patey of Englee would have caught his crab quota by now. However, bad weather and ice are causing problems for crab harvesters on the Northern Peninsula so far this fishing season. Patey of Englee made his first crab-fishing trip on May 17. “It’s unreal how slow going it is,” said Patey. “I believe my first trip last year we hauled up 2,800 pounds. Northern Peninsula harvesters surprised and disappointed by crab price announcement

Harvesters in the 3K region of the Great Northern Peninsula experienced a slight 2 per cent increase in crab quota this year. But the price designation of $4.55 – a price far below what they had hoped for – has many in this fishery frustrated and seeking answers. Englee fisherman Ronald Patey says without a better price for this new crab quota, which is roughly half of what it was in years past, harvesters will struggle to make ends meet. NOFTA membership wants changes in fisheries management so their communities can survive

The North of Fifty-Thirty Association (NOFTA) is working to identify issues and solutions for the fishery on the Great Northern Peninsula. Over the past couple of years, enterprises in the region have been hit by shrimp quota cuts, seen capelin seemingly disappear and, most recently, received word of a drop in northern cod stocks. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
