Amid tensions over Ukraine, Russia and Japan seal deal on fishing quotas
Japan and Russia have reached an agreement over Tokyo’s annual catch quota for Russian-born salmon and trout, the Japanese Fisheries Agency said Saturday, despite delays and chilled relations between the two sides amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Fishermen turning back to port early as fuel costs rise
Jersey’s fishing fleet is struggling amid huge increases in fuel costs and is unable to compete on a level playing field with its French counterparts, who are receiving emergency government subsidies, according to an industry representative. ‘The rises over the last two weeks have been the biggest seen in history. The price of fuel is getting close to treble what it was at the start of the year,’ he said. Italy Fishing Boats Strike Over Fuel Costs
Italian fishing boats will stay in ports this week due to a national strike over high fuel costs that is threatening supplies across the country. “There is grave concern for the dramatic consequences that won’t just affect consumers,” said Rome’s Centro Agroalimentare, Italy’s biggest fish market, which sells 80’000 tons of fish products a year. “We ask the government to act quickly” to support companies in the industry.
