Cemre delivers Norwegian LNG-powered fishing vessel

Turkish shipbuilder Cemre has handed over an LNG-powered vessel to Norwegian fishing company Teige Rederi. Cemre said in a statement on Friday it had delivered the purse seiner/pelagic trawler, Sunny Lady. Designed by Salt Ship Design and classed by DNV, the 86.5 meters long purse seiner/pelagic trawler is the second in the world to feature LNG-powered propulsion and a battery pack, after Libas, Cemre claims. >click to read< 19:01

Innovative Fishing Vessel Launched in Turkey

Turkey’s Cemre Shipyard held a launch ceremony for the newbuild trawler Selvåg Senior being constructed for Norwegian owner Sørheim Holding. Developed in partnership with Skipsteknisk and Selvåg AS, the 79.5-meter-long Selvåg Senior purse seiner trawler will be the third in the world to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel, after the Cemre-built Libas and Sunny Lady. Thanks to the LNG fuel system, the new trawler will adapt to the new “environmentally friendly” vessel flow by reducing carbon emissions being in accordance with IMO Tier III. Liquefied natural gas keeps a temperature of about -140°C to -160°C and must be heated to gas form to function as fuel. A cold recovery system will use the surplus energy from heating the gas to maintaining the refrigerated seawater (RSW) in the cargo tanks. >click to read< 17:25

Rolls-Royce to Design, Equip New Fishing Vessel

Rolls-Royce said it has signed a contract to deliver ship design and a range of equipment to a 70-meter long stern trawler to be built for Olympic Seafood based in Fosnavåg, Norway. The fishing vessel is to be built by Cemre shipyard in Turkey, who also holds a contracted option for a second vessel of the same type for Olympic Seafood. The vessel is designed for bottom trawling as well as pelagic trawling and will have a modern factory deck arrangement to handle and freeze both white fish and shrimp and ensure a high quality catch. >click to read<12:20

Turkey’s unilateral decision to exceed catch limits threatening Bluefin tuna recovery

Documents seen by The Associated Press and EU comments on Friday show that during an intense meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas early this week, delegates were angry at for announcing it would catch up to 73 percent more Bluefin than under an internationally agreed plan. Turkey said this week that its “longstanding and rightful demand” for a higher quota had not been met, forcing it to take independent action. Read the rest here 15:12

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
