Bipartisan Congressional Push for Summer Flounder Assessment

In a bipartisan letter submitted to Assistant Administrator for Fisheries Eileen Sobeck on Thursday, members of the house_of_representatives stressed the importance of scheduling a benchmark assessment for summer flounder in 2017. Citing the socioeconomic value of the commercial and recreational summer flounder fishery and the looming quota reductions proposed for 2017 and 2018 due in part to a lack of data, Rep. Tom MacArthur and 4 other representatives indicate that any delay in the assessment of summer flounder “would be a major mistake and threaten the health of the summer flounder population as well as the economy of the communities the fishery supports.” Read the story here 11:56

Menendez, Pallone hope to ban Atlantic offshore drilling

Offshore drilling would be banned in the Atlantic Ocean under legislation Sen. Robert Menendez and Rep. Frank Pallone say they will introduce in both chambers this week. The New Jersey Democrats announced the legislation on Monday, the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Jersey Shore reps will head up new Congressional Coastal Communities Caucus in Congress

New Jersey Congressmen Frank Pallone, Jr. and Frank LoBiondo joined with colleagues on Tuesday, Feb. 24 to launch the , a bipartisan group designed to highlight the unique concerns of those that live, work, and do business along America’s coasts, according to LoBiondo’s office. Today our coast faces a number of environmental threats, but the good news is that there is still time to stop proposals for man-made environmental disasters. We have done it before, and we can do it again. Five years ago, the Obama administration released a plan that proposed drilling off the Atlantic coast from Delaware to Florida.
