NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. Squid, Squid, Squid! This is not only about Scallopers’ difficulties transiting the area to get to their grounds! These proposed wind farm areas ARE the grounds for the Spring Squid run; and vital to the NY, CT, RI and MA fishermen. For many this fishing on these grounds happens to be a large portion of their revenue for the year—and absolutely necessary for the survival of these already marginal businesses, choking from over-regulation and Catch Shares Privatization!

“The Vineyard Wind award for the power purchase agreement with Massachusetts was the worst-case scenario for Rhode Island commercial fishing vessels, for all squid vessels and really for the worlds calamari supply,” said Meghan Lapp, a fisheries liaison for Seafreeze Ltd, which owns vessels that harvest squid, mackerel, butterfish, and herring.
“Lapp said Rhode Island lands more squid than the rest of the East Coast combined”
