‘If they were sensible, they’d be issuing weir permits and closing down the elver fishery’: Palmyra man, son have last eel weir in state

Whitten’s weir, located off a side street in downtown Newport, is the last one in the state. As a concession to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, which has said that the population of American eels is depleted, the state last winter banned fishing for silver eels, the adult life stage of the species. Nunavut-based marine training helps grow Inuit fishing crews

Nunavut has more then 40 per cent of Canada’s coast line, but very few marine crew members in here are actually from the territory — or even Inuit. The Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium wants to change that, starting with the territory’s fishing industry. Read the rest here 14:54

Astoria man cited for commercial fish-related charges

Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife troopers cited an Astoria man on several commercial fish-related charges after seizing 748 pounds of illegally caught Chinook salmon on the Columbia River near the Willamette River. Troopers also seized an illegal 1,200 foot gillnet used to catch the fish. Read the rest here 14:10
