Buying local is a trend that has really taken off, and from coast to coast people are making sure that it applies to fish.  The idea started on the east coast and has been embraced by many Alaska communities from Sitka, to Juneau and Kodiak.  The marketing concept is called community supported fisheries. ‘Buddha’ Busted: The downfall of a Maine seafood dealer

Fall chinook run breaking all records heading up the Columbia River

“Fish have been counted at Bonneville Dam since it began operating in 1938, but we have never seen numbers like the 68,000 chinook that passed the dam Sept. 9,” said Ben Hausmann, senior fish biologist at Bonneville. “The highest number we have in our records was just more than 47,000 on Sept. 11, 2003.” Read the rest here  See them migrating through the ladder at Bonneville Dam’s counting stations here  09:43

Study highlights threats to Southern Resident killer whales

A NOAA report released on June 25, 2014, which focused on 10 years of research and conservation efforts on the endangered Southern Resident killer whales, confirms that the three major threats to the recovery of the animals are pollution, vessel noise and food availability. Fish Politics: Information on sea lice drug would have cost $35K – SLICE

Information that the leader of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liberals claims is free in British Columbia, would have cost the party about $35,000 here. Dwight Ball said the  Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture quoted him $25 per hour for almost 1,000 hours of work, plus another $10,000 for photocopying of information that was requested by the Liberals having to do with the drug SLICE.
