USCG suspends search for man who fell overboard from fishing vessel 80 miles off Sanibel Island
The United States Coast Guard has suspended a search for a man who fell off a fishing vessel 80 miles off Sanibel Island, Saturday, pending new information. Missing is 29-year-old Sterling Grover. The captain of the fishing vessel Jules’ contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watch standers, Friday, at approximately 10 p.m., reporting Grover fell overboard wearing khaki shorts and no personal flotation device. Rescue crews searched 2,796 square miles, an area about the size of the state of Delaware. Coast Guard rescues 2 crewmen from commercial fishing vessel fire off Fort Myers Beach
A Coast Guard Station Clearwater MH-60 helicopter rescue crew rescued two people, Sunday, after their vessel caught fire approximately 28 miles south of Fort Myers Beach. The aircrew transported the men to Fort Myers Beach High School where local emergency services personnel treated the men on scene. The captain of the vessel contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders via marine radio Channel 16 at 8:13 p.m., stating his 65-foot fishing vessel, F/V Jenna Dawn, was on fire. Coast Guard, partner agency rescue 2 from boat fire east of Skyway Bridge
Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders received a mayday call via VHF Channel 16 from the vessel owner stating his vessel’s engines were in flames, and they had utilized all the fire extinguishers available, and needed immediate assistance. The Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast notifying vessels in the area of the situation and diverted a Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg 45-foot Response Boat—Medium and a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II crews and a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue marine unit to the scene. video, photos, >click to read< 15:48
Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg sets port condition Whiskey for Port of Tampa for Hurricane Elsa
Effective 12 p.m. Friday, the Coast Guard Captain of the Port set port condition Whiskey for the ports of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Manatee, and Ft. Myers due to the expectation of sustained gale force winds of 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph generated from Hurricane Elsa that may arrive within 72 hours. These ports and facilities are currently open to all commercial traffic and all transfer operations may continue while Whiskey remains in effect. Coast Guard tows 2 boats in tandem 98 miles northwest of Tampa Bay, Fla.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a radio call, via VHF-FM channel 16, from the captain of the commercial fishing vessel, Christie Sea, stating the boat was disabled, taking on water and also towing an unmanned boat, the Shamrock.
