GoFundMe for Bandon hero hits target in 24 hours

A GoFundMe which was set up for a courageous electrician from Bandon who rescued a woman from a sinking car at Kennedy Quay reached its target in under 24 hours. William Ross, alongside two Belgian fishermen, Farid Langens and Kevin Roos, played a crucial role in freeing the woman. The trio acted without hesitation and managed to pull the woman from her car, which had entered the water just after midday on Monday. “We were just finished unloading our catch and we heard some people shouting on the quay. ‘Heroic at the highest level’ – Fishermen save woman from sinking car in Cork Harbor

Three fishermen are being hailed as heroes after pulling a woman from a sinking car in Cork city this afternoon. The dramatic rescue happened on Kennedy Quay after a car entered the water shortly after midday today. Fishermen unloading the day’s catch from two boats on the quay jumped in the water and smashed in the two windows to save the woman before the car sank. Rocket found off Irish coast shrouded in mystery as Virgin Orbit rules out ownership

Mystery surrounds the discovery of a rocket engine by fishermen from West Cork after Virgin Orbit has confirmed it does not belong to them. The debris which was discovered in February was thought to be an engine belonging to Virgin Orbit’s failed launch from Cornwall in January. A spokesperson for the company said the debris found by Union Hall fishermen was not the property of Virgin Orbit and was unrelated to the launch from Cornwall. Cork fishermen find what they believe to be failed Virgin rocket ship motor

While fishing for monkfish, the group of fishermen from Keelbeg, Union Hall hauled what they now believe is a part of the Virgin rocket ship. Virgin Orbit, a company created by business tycoon Richard Branson, made their debut launch of the LauncherOne rocket off the coast of Cornwall in January. The launch was the first of its kind off of UK soil. UK fishing vessel sinks off Mizen Head

Shortly after 9 o’clock (yesterday) morning Valentia Coast Guard was alerted to a vessel in difficulty approximately 60 miles South West of Mizen Head. The UK registered fishing vessel F/V Piedras was reported to be taking on water and had lost propulsion. Shortly after raising the alert the crew of 11 decided to abandon the vessel and transfer to another fishing vessel, the F/V Armaven. No injuries were reported. ‘They saved my life’ – Cork fisherman and crewman save man from burning yacht

Fisherman Mick Hoey was tending to shrimp pods in nearby waters with his crewman Cian when he saw the yacht that had caught fire off the coast of Myrtleville, Co Cork. Mr Hoey has said he “made a beeline” for the yacht which was being captained by Alan Mulcahy. There is no name yet for the movement, but organisers are planning to hold a series of public meetings in coastal towns and villages. Four fishermen rescued from liferaft after fishing vessel fire off the Cork coast

Shortly before 2am this morning, Valentia Coast Guard was alerted to a fire on board the ‘Horizon’ fishing vessel around 20 miles south east of the Old Head of Kinsale. A multi-agency response co-ordinated by the Valentia Coast Guard,,, Within minutes of the mayday alert being issued, the crew abandoned the vessel to their liferaft as the fire had engulfed their boat. F/V Ellie Ádhamh: Imperiled fishing trawler goes down off Cork coast

The Coastguard at Valentia has confirmed that the fishing trawler, the Ellie Ádhamh, which spent a second night adrift off the Cork coast sank shortly before midday. Yesterday evening, the skipper and six crewmen were winched to safety by the Waterford-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117. The naval vessel LÉ George Bernard Shaw had attempted to tow the trawler to shore. An operation to tow the vessel to shore has been abandoned due to poor conditions. The trawler lost power and steering 80km off the west Cork coast yesterday. It was drifting for several hours in rough seas until the naval vessel LÉ George Bernard Shaw attached a tow earlier today. They were  rescued 50km west of Mizen Head at around 7pm, in sea conditions described as “horrendous”. Rescue operation resumes for disabled fishing trawler with seven aboard off the Cork coast Saturday

The Wexford-registered trawler, Ellie Adhamh, lost power early on Friday morning 130km off the Bull Rock in west Cork while returning from a prawn fishing trip in the Porcupine Bank. A major rescue operation was launched involving the Irish Coast Guard and the Naval Service and co-ordinated by the Irish Coast Guard Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Valentia Island. Seven crewmen remain aboard a stranded fishing trawler off Cork coast

Several crew members of a fishing trawler that’s drifting without power off the Cork coast are to remain on board the vessel overnight, with high winds and rough seas anticipated. The fishing vessel raised the alarm this morning when it lost power off the coast of Castletownbere, and it’s understood other trawlers in the area tried to offer assistance. ‘We are holding three million prawns for which there is no market’; Cork fishermen facing nightmare situation

John Nolan, Managing Director of Castletownbere Fishermen’s Co-op, was blunt and direct in the past week when he said that sectors of the French fishing industry were trying to impose a boycott on the sale there of any fish caught by non/French fishermen. “They have been taking television crews to wholesale and processing operations which they accused of buying fish from non-French boats and not supporting their own industry. “People are afraid actually in France to take fish off us,” he said.  “Even big supermarkets like Leclerc, even their government is saying only buy French fish. Body found as search for missing fisherman in Cork enters its fourth day

A BODY has been recovered in the massive air-sea search operation for a missing Irish fisherman.
