Fairhaven Fire Department and Harbormaster responds to diesel fuel spill in harbor
The fishing vessel F/V Jack M reported an equipment malfunction that spilled an unknown quantity of diesel fuel into the harbor. The spill located at Union wharf extended as far North as the Seaport Inn and Marina. The spill impacted Fairhaven Shipyard, Blue Harvest Seafoods, Pease Park Boat Ramp, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Seaport Inn. The vessel’s owner is cooperating and has contracted with Frank Corp Environmental, located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to complete the cleanup. Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Coast Guard Pollution Control is investigating the cause of the malfunction.” >click to read< 07:11
Falmouth beach closes after lobster boat spills diesel fuel
The northern beach at the Falmouth town landing is closed after a lobster boat spilled diesel fuel into the water Monday morning. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, a local lobsterman had beached the boat on purpose to do maintenance. When the tide came up, the boat didn’t. Biologist slams U.S. vessel for running aground in Witless Bay Reserve
Oil from a U.S. fishing vessel killed a number of birds inside the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve on Friday, and a seabird biologist says the boat had no business being so close to Green Island to run aground in the first place.,, The Canadian Coast Guard’s environmental response team cleaned up Friday, and DFO said no pollution was reported in Witless Bay. Transport Canada is investigating. No oiled birds spotted in Witless Bay area – In a statement Tuesday, the Canadian Coast Guard said its environmental response surveillance flights — and surveys by boat of the area on Saturday along with the Canadian Wildlife Service — confirmed there was no pollution in the area. Oily sheen from B.C. fish farm diesel spill can’t be recovered: officials
An oily rainbow-like sheen on the water left by a diesel fuel spill off the north coast of Vancouver Island cannot be cleaned up, sparking concerns for a nearby First Nation that relies on clam digging for food and economic security. The thin layer of fuel, which covered a 5.5-kilometre radius at one point outside the salmon farm where the spill originated, has been deemed unrecoverable because it cannot be captured by skimmer vessels or sorbent materials, British Columbia’s Environment Ministry said.
