Fishermen Reel in 26-Foot-Long WWII Torpedo Inside Their Net

A fisherman landed an explosive catch while out trawling for fish along the sea bed in Denmark that was later revealed to be an undetonated World War II torpedo. Danish fisherman René Kloster alerted the country’s authorities after the torpedo became entangled in the net several miles off the west coast of the Jutland peninsula on Saturday, July 1. Kloster, captain of the fishing vessel St. Anthony, said that the torpedo was later detonated away from the coast. “It was huge. I have never seen such a big torpedo before. It is quite incomprehensible that such a big one comes up. Many fishermen have a story about “the one that got away.” Recently, one Maine crew had the opposite experience with an accidental catch of a lifetime. Tuesday, their roughly 600-pound tuna made for a special afternoon at the Belfast Soup Kitchen. “It’s like anything in life. Anything can happen,” said Ross Alex, captain of the Kathryn Ann.,, ”It couldn’t be revived. It was too entangled in the net. They realized the fish was going to be a loss,” said Doug Shartzer, who’s a friend of Steeves. Steeves called one of his contacts at Maine Marine Patrol. After getting the okay from the state, Shartzer made a call to the Belfast Soup Kitchen, which agreed to take the tuna. On Tuesday, about 350 servings were prepared to feed the community. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
