AK sockeye salmon market faces wild card with Fraser River run

Salmon fishermen were back out on the Copper River yesterday/Monday hoping for a catch of 33-thousand sockeyes. The first 12-hour opener last Thursday was slow going – 510 landings yielded a total take of 27-thousand reds, down 16% from the forecast, and just 1,000 kings. Advance prices for the first fish dipped a bit to $3.50 a pound for sockeyes and $6.00 for kings. That compares to $4.00 and $6 to $7 last year.  Read more here 22:01

Alaska’s 2014 (“Cordova hopping”) salmon season officially got underway at 7am today with the first 12 hour opener at the Copper River. Cordova is home base for the famous fishery. The town has doubled in size over the past few weeks, the weather is great, the feeling in the air is electric with everybody getting their boats ready to go and some have already headed out. It’s hard to believe but Thursday marks the official start of Alaska’s 2014 salmon season with a 12 hour opener at the Copper River. The year’s first fresh sockeye salmon will be flown out and featured in markets far and wide. Read more here  16:47

Graying of the Fleet project aims at young fishermen

The average age of Alaska permit holders is 47 — and there are twice as many permit holders aged 45 to 60 as there are between 30 and 44. NOAA announced this week the first evidence that the high acid content in the Pacific Ocean is dissolving the shells of tiny free-swimming snails called pteropods. Listen to Laine here  17:10

FISH-With-Mic-Logo-GRAPHIC-303-x-400-e1360148757522Alaska salmon permit values are increasing in many regions; likewise quota shares of halibut Listings by four brokers show that Bristol Bay drift permits are valued at about $134,000 by the state and listed for sale at 150,000 to $170,000. This is Fish Radio. I’m Stephanie Mangini. Sitka Herring prices could hurt the haul. Sitka’s Seiners Deliver Big, But at What Price?

As of Friday Sitka’s sac roe herring fishery  had just under 3 thousand tons left to deliver. Seiners have had no problem catching the nice 16,000 ton haul this year. The quick season has been  a good one with good quality fish and excellent roe counts.  The big  problem fishermen are facing is the roe market itself. Listen, and read more here  16:06

Our livelihood  and environment is being threatened.  Our wildlife is being destroyed. Our surrounding waters and hard work have made Kodiak the largest fishing port in the nation there needs to be a huge effort to clean it up. This community lives by fish and our salmon fishing is about to start. Southeast Alaska wrapped up its best fishery in a decade with 80 crabbers hauling up one and a quarter million pounds in 11 days. At an average fishermen’s price to of  $2.70/lb the Tanner fishery is worth more than $3 million to the region. Read more here  18:47

Or that deep water golden king crabs are almost indestructible and appear to resist ocean acidification?   Those are just a few of the things being studied at the nation’s top king crab lab at Kodiak. Jiggers are now  allowed to deliver pollock along with cod for the first time in the state season.  Jigging for pollock has been open before in federal waters but with little to no effort. Pollock as halibut bait shows mixed results, Good in the GOA! This is Fish Radio. I’m Laine Welch

FISH-With-Mic-Logo-GRAPHIC-303-x-400-e1360148757522Pollock has been tested as a halibut bait to replace pricier chum salmon.  Each year halibut researchers use over 300-thousand pounds of chums in their stock surveys, costing nearly half a million dollars. The baits are used at more than 1,200 testing stations from Oregon to the Bering Sea.  A study three years ago showed some promising signs for pollock. Listen @fishradio  19:55

By-Catch Reduction is the Theme for Alaska’s Future Fisheries
