Workers respond to a fishing boat that ran aground in Homer Harbor

Quick action by salvage crews last Wednesday, June 2, prevented a Homer fishing boat from flooding and sinking when it ran aground on the wood grid in the Homer Harbor. The 40-foot F/V Redoubt heeled over after the boat got stuck on the edge of the grid as the tide went out.,, “With the tide flooding, without those bags it would have filled the boat,” Hawkins said. “”He (the boat owner) was so fortunate in that everybody and everything was in place to make it work so they could save his boat.” >photos, click to read< 09:16

Fishing boat beaches while captain snoozes

A commercial fishing boat grounded early Friday morning near the East Chop Beach Club after the captain reportedly fell asleep at the helm. “That was a sight — a big fishing boat like that on the beach,” Oak Bluff Fire Chief John Rose said. Rose said the captain, whom the U.S. Coast Guard later identified as Sam Berreira, set his autopilot and dozed off. Oak Bluffs Police and U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicole Groll separately identified the vessel as the Mary Emmalene. >click to read< 16:53

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
