House Natural Resources Committee examines red snapper fishery

WASHINGTON — A House committee on Thursday tackled the difficult challenge of balancing commercial and recreational demands on the Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery. Republican Rep. Steve Southerland of Florida criticized the way NOAA officials have managed red snapper, especially their proposed Days-at-Sea Program for Charter-for-Hire.Southerland raised a hypothetical scenario in which 20 charter boats are granted permits while 60 are not.  continued@newspress

Texas wildlife officials outraged by Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council action

Red snapper fishing is a lure for offshore charter boats on South Padre Island. Yet, a federal regulatory council could soon reduce the recreational fishing season in federal waters to less than two weeks — in fact, the suggested season could dwindle to as few as 11 days. For the companies invested in expensive boats, who already face rising prices for gasoline and other costs, such a short window for trips is disheartening. Read more

Gulf of Mexico fish farms move another step closer to reality

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, which advises the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service on fish and fishing in the Gulf, recently approved the final draft of its proposed rule to regulating offshore Gulf marine aquaculture. After some more federal review and an expected public comment period this summer, the idea is that sometime next year businesses could begin applying for permits to establish red snapper, grouper and other finfish-farms in Gulf federal waters, which in Louisiana extend from three to 200 miles offshore. Topics include restoration projects, electronic reporting requirements by for-hire vessels, shrimp, red snapper, gray triggerfish and gag grouper.
