UPDATED: One F/V Chief William Saulis crewman found dead, search continues for 5 others on Bay of Fundy
Searchers were combing the Bay of Fundy by air and sea after the scallop boat Chief William Saulis and its six crew members went missing in rough seas early Tuesday morning. Late last night, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, which is leading the search for the vessel, reported that one of men was found dead. Former crewman Jacob Jacquard heard some names of those believed to be on board, but that list was more than six names so he didn’t know for sure who was working. Crew of five abandons vessel and makes it to shore
A fishing vessel went aground in rough surf off Yarmouth Bar early on Dec. 15. Lieutenant commander Brian Owens, senior public affairs officer with Joint Task Force (Atlantic) and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax, says the centre received a call at 6:12 a.m. “The vessel went aground from all indications and five persons onboard abandoned the vessel, but thankfully, made it ashore,” he said. >click to read< 15:15
Search on for fishing boat after debris found along shore of Annapolis County
RCMP Sgt. Andrew Joyce said the force was contacted this morning just before 8 a.m. about two life-rafts that were near the shore, washing in and out on the tide near Hillsburn Road Hillsburn, Annapolis County. Search for missing fisherman ‘a needle in a haystack’ say P.E.I. RCMP
RCMP and P.E.I. Ground Search and Rescue wrapped up its search for the day for Jordan Hicken late Thursday afternoon with no sign of the missing P.E.I. fisherman. Hicken went overboard from his fishing boat off Naufrage, on the Island’s North Shore, early Tuesday morning. RCMP Staff Sgt. Search underway for 2 missing fishermen off Tignish, P.E.I.
A search is underway for two people missing from a boat that capsized late Tuesday afternoon in Tignish, P.E.I. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax is co-ordinating the search. “At approximately 5 o’clock local time, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre here in Halifax received a report of two people in the water near Tignish, P.E.I.” said Maj. 2 dead after fishing boat capsizes in Nova Scotia
Two people are dead after a boat capsized off the coast of Port Medway in the Region of Queens Municipality, N.S. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax says rescuers responded to a call Saturday morning reporting an overturned crabbing vessel. A woman, 55, was found unresponsive on the beach and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Safe opening day to lobster season off southwestern N.S.; some calls for assistance on Day 2
Dumping day, the most risky day of the six-month lobster fishery off southwestern Nova Scotia, was reported to have been a safe day with no incidents occurring. But day two of the season has not been incident free while vessels have been on the water hauling up catches. While the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) says there were no incidents reported to it, and no assets needed to be tasked, on Tuesday, Nov. 28, the day the lobster season got underway, this wasn’t the case the following day. click here to read the story 14:21
Coast Guard responding to a fishing vessel fire near Gabriola Island
Rescue crews are responding after a fishing boat caught fire off the coast of Gabriola Island. Stormy weather puts fishing boat in distress, 5 people rescued northeast of St. John’s
Five people have been rescued from a fishing boat in distress 150 nautical miles northeast of St. John’s. A spokesperson for the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax said the boat was in distress due to stormy weather in the area. The JRCC said Sunday it had dispatched a Cormorant, Hercules and two Canadian Coast Guard vessels to the ship in the early morning. JRCC said all five people aboard were rescued by helicopter and taken to Gander. No one was injured. Link 09:58
Under a full compliment of resources, lobster fisherman are optimistic for repeat of last season
Wharves all along the south shore are piled high with lobster fishing gear and boats are at the ready for dumping day and the start of the commercial lobster fishery on Monday, Nov. 28 in Lobster Fishing Areas (LFA) 33 and 34. As always, Mother Nature has the final call when the season starts. If it’s fair winds and seas, boats in LFA 34 will leave the wharves at 6 a.m. and in LFA 33, at 7 a.m. A full compliment of resources will be on standby on the water and in the air for the season start, said Sean Arbour, search and recue coordinator at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax. “The three lifeboat stations at West Port, Clark’s Harbour and Sambro will have the cutters on the water in position about 20 to 30 miles out on stand-by,” said Arbour. “Offshore we will have two large vessels on-site tasked to search and rescue. Typically, one is stationed off Yarmouth and the other one stationed off Liverpool about two hours off.” Read the rest here 18:20
Fisherman in medical distress rescued from fishing boat off Ucluelet
A crew member of a commercial fishing boat off the coast of Vancouver Island was hoisted to safety Thursday after experiencing a medical issue, rescuers say. A search and rescue crew from the 442 rescue squadron was called into action about 165 nautical miles southwest of Ucluelet. A Cormorant helicopter and Buffalo aircraft responded, and a rescue technician was lowed onto the deck of the boat to assist the crew member. He was then hoisted to the helicopter hovering above and flown to Victoria General Hospital for treatment of the unspecified medical issue, according to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
