New Zealand: Safety training needed after man killed on trawler
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has recommended fishing company Sanford Limited introduce more safety training and has warned against the use of performance-impairing substances after an investigation into the death of a trawler freezerman. Baseball mourns Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez – Killed with two others in boating tragedy
Jose Fernandez escaped from Cuba by boat on his fourth try as a teenager, and when his mother fell into the Yucatan Channel during the journey, he jumped in and pulled her out. Fernandez’s heroic backstory made his death early Sunday that much more heart-wrenching. The charismatic Miami Marlins ace was killed in a boating accident at age 24. A statement released by MPI today said the birds were killed when the commercial fisherman failed to use a tori line – a compulsory device used to scare birds away from baited hooks – while fishing for southern bluefin tuna off the West Coast of New Zealand. “The skipper faces a maximum fine of $100,000 in relation to an offence under the Fisheries (Commercial Fishing) Regulations and forfeiture of the vessel used in the operation.” The incident was reported by an MPI observer who was on board the vessel at the time.
