Mount Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival set for April 25

The 34th annual Town of Mount Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival is slated to be held on April 25. After 2020’s event was canceled due to COVID-19, organizers are hoping to hold the yearly ceremony this time around. Submerged shrimp boat marked as abandoned vessel by Coast Guard

A vessel just outside the mouth of Shem Creek has been marked as abandoned after sinking on June 24. According to the Coast Guard, the vessel is not in the navigable channel and is not impeding traffic into or out of Shem Creek. The Coast Guard cannot legally salvage sunken vessels except under specific circumstances outlined by law. “In this case, the Coast Guard oversaw a federally contracted effort to remove oil from multiple tanks on the vessel after the owner failed to take timely, appropriate action to mitigate environmental impacts. photos, >click to read< 19:24

When I think of my hometown, my thoughts always go to Shem Creek and the shrimp fleet that has been the most recognizable image of our town for 70 to 80 years. On Sept. 11, one of the icons of that creek was killed in an accident on Coleman Boulevard. Wayne Magwood’s death was met with great sadness by all who knew and loved him. Wayne’s family began the shrimping industry on Shem Creek in 1930 when Capt. C. Magwood became the first fisherman to bring ocean shrimp into the creek. >click to read< 17:23

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
