Commercial Fisherman Justin P. Doberck, 41, of Mattapoisett, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 7, 2023.

Those who knew Justin were amazed watching him move through this life, and feel blessed to have been in it at the same time. He was beautiful and one of the most interesting people anyone could know. He was loved fiercely by his family who were relentlessly proud of him. Justin was a commercial offshore fishing captain for many years, starting over two decades ago working on the Serene out of Mattapoisett, captured on the cover of Insider Magazine, F/V Buzzards Bay, F/V Sally Katherine and F/V Silver Key out of the Port of New Bedford, F/V Direction out of Fairhaven, and then operator of fishing vessels with his mate and brother, Billy, for more than 10 years for M.E. Fisheries, then F/V McKinley, and most currently for Atlantic Red Crab. He also enjoyed logging and working at his sawmill in his spare time. >click to read more< 17:19

Commercial Fisherman Robert Wayne Day of Waldoboro, Maine, has passed away

Robert “Robi” Wayne Day, 57, of Waldoboro, passed away unexpectedly at Miles Memorial Hospital on May 26, 2022, from a pulmonary embolism. Born on September 27, 1964, in Rockland, he was the son of Robert Day and Mary (Studley) Lund. After serving in the military, Robi worked as a commercial scalloper in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He often recounted the time he was swept overboard by a wave; he thought he would never see his family again but miraculously drifted back towards the boat and lived to tell the tale. Captain Daniel Balbo – Commercial Fisherman

Gloucester – Daniel Balbo, age 63, of Gloucester, passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2020. He was the husband of 39 years to Mary Lou (Goulter) Balbo. Born in Gloucester, he was the son of Accursio and Shirley (Roberts) Balbo. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1976.
After high school Daniel followed the family tradition of becoming a commercial fisherman and went on to captain his boat, The Hunter. Daniel was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and loved all its traditions. He especially loved celebrating the St. Peter’s Fiesta and being a seine boat champion. He also was an avid boater and enjoyed his bicycle rides around Cape Ann. >click to read< 17:49

Murrells Inlet fishing community celebrates life of pioneer who passed unexpectedly

The fishing village of Murrells Inlet recently lost a true pioneer with the death of Phil Conklin, a fisherman extraordinaire and longtime owner of Seven Seas Seafood, located right on U.S. 17 Business in the inlet. Conklin passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on June 13 at the age of 71. Five days later a crowd of about 300 family and friends, including a who’s who in the Murrells Inlet fishing and restaurant industries, celebrated his life at Creek Ratz on the inlet’s Marshwalk. The Celebration of Life was indeed a party, complete with an open bar for attendees, per Phil Conklin’s request. His son, Chris Conklin, found a note hand-written by his dad among his closing documents that read “Don’t grieve, have a party. Bye.” >click to read<18:19
