The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet
NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. “The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) publishes its proposed List of Fisheries (LOF) for 2015, as required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The proposed LOF for 2015 reflects new information on interactions between commercial fisheries and marine mammals. NMFS must classify each commercial fishery on the LOF into one of three categories under the MMPA based upon the level of mortality and serious injury of marine mammals that occurs incidental to each fishery.”
Now where will the “Agency” place the Energy Industry’s seismic blasting, oil and gas rigs and 650 foot wind tower construction disruption on this list? They would certainly seem to qualify.
Will National Marine Fisheries Service List the Industries of Energy (LIE) that cause the “mortality and serious injury of marine mammals”?
DickyG you ole cynic you!
Willy Y Brown, (am I confusing him with Willy O?) says he “wanted to take some time to clear up a few misperceptions about the bureau’s decision and what it means.”
I’d guess that kill list that NMFS put out a couple of years ago was fantasy because, “As a scientist who has spent a good part of my career working in non-governmental environmental organizations and in industry, I understand and appreciate advocacy. At the same time, I believe that everyone benefits by getting the facts right”.
Safe seismic testing doesn’t harm marine animals.
“To date, there has been no documented scientific evidence of noise from air guns used in geological and geophysical (G&G) seismic activities adversely affecting marine animal populations or coastal communities. This technology has been used for more than 30 years around the world. It is still used in U.S. waters off of the Gulf of Mexico with no known detrimental impact to marine animal populations or to commercial fishing.”
I’d say Willy O is wearing a BOEM Darth Vader helmet like the boss man!
Just like when Dr. Jane Lubchenco PhD headed up NOAA. NOAA/NMFS is still part of the Commerce Dept. Show them the MONEY. We can’t forget the GREEN.
Then EDF is always interested in the Environment, the Investment Environment.
