Busted: Coast Guard uncovers illegal halibut catch near Kodiak, Alaska

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Bailey Barco, homeported in Ketchikan, Alaska, boarded the 38-foot fishing vessel F/V Competition and discovered 18 halibut and one ling cod onboard that were retained while the season was closed. The crew seized the catch and issued violations for possession of halibut during a closed fishery, operating beyond 3 nautical miles with an expired EPIRB hydrostatic release, and not having a current commercial fishing vessel safety examination. >click to read< 19:24

Missing Fisherman’s Body Found in Kodiak Harbor

Kodiak Police Chief Rhonda Wallace said Saturday that a preliminary identification indicates it is 27-year-old Mihay Kalugin, a crewman aboard the fishing vessel Competition, who disappeared six weeks ago. Kalugin was last seen in downtown Kodiak in the early morning hours of February 22nd, a Sunday. Reutov said he was told Kalugin was having a raucous Saturday night on the town between fishing trips and had gotten into a fight on the docks with three other men the night be disappeared. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
