Oak Island, NC – Dozens of dead sharks found washed ashore

Oak Island dead sharksThe NC Division of Marine Fisheries is investigating after dozens of dead sharks were found washed ashore on a popular beach strand in Brunswick County on Sunday morning. Michael Boswell, a local resident, was walking on the beach when he spotted “approximately 50 dead sharks” on the sand near Southeast 64th Street in Oak Island. Read the rest here  17:30

New shellfish regulations taking effect in NC

New regulations are taking effect in North Carolina to help keep shellfish safer for people to eat. The new rules are designed to the spread of Vibrio bacteria, naturally-occurring bacteria that can cause serious illness. Read more here  16:22

NC Division of Marine Fisheries looks to public for funding ideas

One of three Division of Marine Fisheries meetings was held at the New Hanover County Northeast Regional Library to ask the public for ideas for funding its sea turtle monitoring program. The meetings were a requirement mandated by Senate Bill 402, passed earlier in 2013, which provided the division $1.1 million to fund its At-Sea Observer Program. more@luminanews 19:16

Rumor about ending commercial fishing addressed; hundreds show up – More than 100 fisherman showed up

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – More than 100 fisherman showed up Wednesday at the Division of Marine Fisheries over a misleading message…..

They all thought the board was going to vote to end commercial fishing,

but that was not the case….Shrimpers also felt the issue of ending commercial fishing was something that would soon be brought up and when it does, they are all going to fight it.
