Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association questions LFA23 lobster extension

CHARLOTTETOWN — Although the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association has condemned a Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ decision to add five days to the end of the spring lobster fishery in New Brunswick’s Lobster Fishing Area 23, a co-chair of the Area 24 Lobster Advisory Committee on Prince Edward Island’s north shore views the DFO move as precedent-setting. Chiefs welcome delay in WPRFMC vote

Traditional leaders who petitioned against changing the rules to allow longliners to fish in near shore waters now relegated for small alia vessels, have welcomed the decision by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council to delay a vote until more discussions in the territory. Seismic testing approved — over Inuit opposition — for Canada’s eastern Arctic

The project is planned by an international consortium of three mining companies under the umbrella name Multi-Klient Invest, or MKI. The seismic tests involve towing an air gun behind a ship up and down the waters of Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, off Baffin Island’s east coast. Read more here 18:22

There is an old joke with the premise that the best kind of boat belongs to someone else. As is the case with the best humor, there is a lot of truth to the joke. Boats are expensive and given our relatively short season in New England, the return on investment can be diminished by a few rainy weekends. One solution to this challenge is a part of the commercial fishing industry that does not immediately come to mind — charter boats. Joseph Murray says his friend made a terrible mistake,,,Joseph Vaudo, owner of Joe’s Lobster Mart in Sandwich. Vaudo, 63, pleaded guilty in March to receiving stolen oysters in the market located next to the Cape Cod Canal, willfully misleading police during an investigation and failure or refusal to file required statistical reports of wholesale and retail dealers. jeeez.
