It would be difficult to exaggerate the sense of frustration within the fishing industry over this year’s ICES advice, especially when read in conjunction with the Commission’s Communication on how it intends to approach the December negotiations this year. With a few exceptions, stock after stock displays low or declining fishing mortality and steadily rebuilding biomass. The advice also suggests that major cuts quota will be proposed for 2015. Deepwater Wind critic alleges mishandling of public hearings The complaint filed on July 11 centers on Shields’ testimony at a CRMC subcommittee hearing on Feb. 27, when he alleges the subcommittee members prevented him and two other individuals from testifying on the potential negative economic impact of the wind farm, while proponents of Deepwater Wind were allowed to comment on project costs and economics without interruption. 20:40
EU fisheries policy ‘a failure’, concludes UK review
The EU’s Common Fisheries Policy failed to achieve its central objectives, the government’s review of the balance of power between the UK and the EU has concluded. Frustrated South Shore lobstermen fear impact of new restrictions
Lobsterman Michael Duane gets by without a paycheck for two-and-a-half months each year, but he says going much longer than that would be difficult. Duane could face that reality next winter, as new regulations set by the National Marine Fisheries Service ban the use of lobster trap and pot gear from Jan. 1 to April 30 off much of the state’s coast. Leona Aglukkaq targets Greenpeace in ICC speech, warns of alignment with the enviros.
Leona Aglukkaq, Nunavut’s MP and Canada’s Minister of Environment, had strong words against Greenpeace in her keynote address at the Inuit Circumpolar Council’s general assembly in Inuvik, N.W.T. “Inuit were victims of misinformation and lies spread by a group that had no regard for their impact on our way of life,” she said of Greenpeace’s campaign against the seal hunt.
