‘We need it desperately’: Great Lakes Commercial Fishermen look for help as industry shrinks
Commercial fishing on the Great Lakes began 150 years ago, and fishermen once numbered in the thousands. Now, only a handful of businesses are still at it, and many are aging out and looking for help. Jamie LeClair represents the fifth generation involved in her family-run commercial fishing business. Titus Seilheimer, a fisheries specialist for the Wisconsin Sea Grant, said the industry needs to start training the next generation of commercial fishermen. “There are concerns. Jewell Thomas “Tom” English III, 75, of Oak Island, Texas, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at his home, with his loving family by his side. He was born on May 12, 1947, in Oceanside, California, to the late Margaret Emily Powers and Jewell Thomas English, Jr. He enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era. Tom was the owner and operator of a commercial fishing business and the fishing vessel F/V M&M (“you know where it melts”) for many years. Gregory Mayhew has passed away
Gregory Mayhew, 72, died peacefully at his home in West Tisbury on Wednesday evening, April 11, enveloped by the love of his family. Greg battled chronic illness for many years, although this was rarely apparent, due to his ready smile and upbeat nature. Gregory was born Sept. 19, 1945, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Fishing Vessel Nite Owl was from Golden Meadow
HoumaToday – As he mourns the loss of a close friend claimed by the Gulf of Mexico, Golden Meadow fisherman Larry Moore said he won’t return to the commercial fishing business. Moore owned the Nite Owl, a fishing boat that sank Friday in the Gulf. FORT PIERCE — A commercial fishing business owner says the city shouldn’t use public resources for a private enterprise that would benefit a few and give his competition an unfair advantage, especially when he’s working on a similar project. Day Boat’s project includes replacing the current docks with 50 new boat slips, building a new seawall, adding new utilities, expanding the processing and refrigeration facility, creating a new fueling system for commercial boats and the public, and reconstructing the existing buildings.
