Facebook to begin laying cable through fishing grounds off Nova Scotia

Installation of a transatlantic submarine telecommunications cable for tech giant Facebook on the seabed off southern Nova Scotia is set to begin as soon as this week. The Canadian portion of the route will take the cable through fishing grounds and the Fundian Channel, an area being considered for designation as a Marine Protected Area because of its deepsea corals and sponges. Fishing groups in Nova Scotia say their feedback was ignored, including a suggested routing that would avoid key fishing grounds. “The consultation here was largely non-existent,” said Kris Vascotto with the Atlantic Groundfish Council, which represents large fishing companies in the region. >click to read< 09:06

Coronavirus: How fishing trade transformed to survive lockdown

Some fishermen and women have said business has boomed since coronavirus forced them to transform their trade. The industry has been hit hard by the pandemic with fish prices plummeting in March when lockdown began. But some small-scale fishermen said their “savior” was starting to sell direct to households via social media. Some businesses also started using sheds and garages to process their catches after lockdown restrictions were introduced. Clare Island fisherman takes action to stop fibreoptic cable project off Co Mayo

A Clare Island fisherman has launched High Court proceedings aimed at stopping the laying of fibre optic cable off the Co Mayo coast as part of a multi-million-euro international communications project. James O’Toole is challenging the granting of a licence to the Irish leg of the project which will see a transatlantic subsea cable system connect Northern Europe and the US.,, On Wednesday, Mr Justice David Barniville granted AEC’s application to fast-track Mr O’Toole’s case in the Commercial Court,,, He and other fishermen are concerned about the risk of fishing gear becoming entangled on the surface laid cable and that fishing gear may have to be abandoned which could entrap marine species and cause environmental pollution. >click to read< 15:37

Hank the cat came back, but only after stowing away on a fishing boat

When Hank the cat disappeared from his home on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore, his owners thought he was gone for good. Instead, he was on a grand adventure. Poor season drives a black market for crabs in Qld

Poor weather over summer has resulted in a lucrative black market for the sale of mud crabs in Queensland. Recreational fishermen have been caught taking to websites such as Facebook, eBay and Gumtree to illegally sell mud crabs for up to $50 to try to reap the benefits of a poor crabbing season. It comes as the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol was preparing for a busy long weekend as thousands of people were taking to the water over the Easter break. Fishers and crabbers have also been found resorting to illegal activities such as keeping undersized and female mud crabs after a dry summer saw fewer mud crabs being caught in Queensland’s waterways. Meat from slaughtered sharks off UK coastline ‘could end up on sale at chippies’ – Oh No!

The image, which has sparked outrage, shows the heads and fins of up to 60 of the creatures which were dumped near the coastline of the Isle of Wight. That Facebook stuff will bite you in the ass! Fishery Officers ‘like’ Facebook after paua poacher nabbed

Fishery officers have praised the public after numerous tip-offs led to the apprehension of a person illegally selling paua on Facebook. On August 22, The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) received information about a person who was offering paua for sale on Facebook at $10 each.
