Father and son rescued at sea share emotional reunion with police officers that saved them
The father and son who were rescued at sea by a Boston Police harbor vessel last week had an emotional reunion with the officers that saved their lives. Joseph and Tommy Azeredo were dropping lobster traps in Boston Harbor on Wednesday when their boat’s motor got caught in a line. Joseph says after their boat’s motor was cut, the pair crashed into some rocks and started sinking, and at the time he couldn’t find his son Tommy. “I was thinking about my family, didn’t think I was going to see them again, I can hear my father screaming for me, it was terrifying man, it was very terrifying,” said Tommy Azeredo. The father and son floated in the water with the help of a cooler not far from Graves Light before they were rescued by Boston Police officers Stephen Merrick and Garrett Boyle. Father, Son Clinging to Cooler Rescued After Lobster Boat Sinks in Boston Harbor
A father and son held on for their lives by clinging to a cooler and lifebuoy while stranded off the coast of Boston Wednesday evening. Officers Stephen Merrick and Garret Boyle of the Boston Police Harbor Unit responded to the 911 call at 6:30 p.m. “We’re so weak, I can’t even move. Help him up, please,” the son said to the officers during the rescue, which was captured on video. “Seeing their faces, they were tired, they were scared,” Merrick noted. The stranded men stated to police that they were out catching lobsters when their engines died. Video, >click to read< 09:24
Portland lobstermen catch rare blue lobster
A father and son fishing in Casco Bay Thursday morning caught a rare, blue lobster that will be preserved in a tank at one of the Portland waterfront’s best-known restaurants. The lobster, which is bright blue, was caught in the ocean waters beyond Peaks Island, said Luke Rand, who serves as sternman on his father’s boat, the Audrey B. Rand. Rand, 36, has been fishing since he was 16. “We’ve never pulled one this color or even seen one to throw back,” said Rand, who lives in Falmouth. His dad, Mark Rand, has been fishing for more than 40 years. Video, photo, >click to read< 14:44
Father and son keep their family fishing tradition alive
Like a lot of things on the old boat, the starter was beat up and broken. To get underway, Nick Nieuwkerk connected the electrical terminals with the metal end of a screwdriver. Then, with a zap and spark, the ancient Detroit Diesel engine roared to life. But then the throttle wouldn’t stay put, so Nick’s father, Knoep Nieuwkerk, rigged it open with a spoon and piece of string. Eventually, the pair were steaming out of Woods Harbor, Nova Scotia, on their way to Portland on April 7, aboard a 44-foot fishing boat that had seen better days since it first hit the water, 42 years earlier. There was no guarantee they’d make it, but they had to try. >video, photos, click to read< 07:38

‘Deadliest Catch’ Drama of the Week: Is Captain Wild Bill Questioning His Son’s Manhood?
“Deadliest Catch” is bringing some surprises to the wheelhouse this season, with the many ups and downs of new–and seasoned–skippers. Last week, fans saw Captain Keith deciding to make a change in his life; tonight on Discovery Channel, will Captain Wild Bill ask some similarly life-altering questions? Wild Bill’s relationship with his son has always seemed strained. Wild Bill, of course, is an old-school fisherman, guiding the Cape Caution with all that his years of experience at sea have taught him. And, typically, that approach is much more direct and black-and-white than that of his son, Zack Larson, who grew up with today’s, let’s face it, more forgiving-of-failure attitude. Wild Bill’s expectations for his son are extremely high, but, time and time again, it just seems Zack disappoints. Read the rest here 14:09
