Boat sustains heavy damage as it burns along Fishermen’s Terminal

A large boat at Seattle’s Fishermen’s Terminal suffered severe damage during a large fire on board Sunday evening. Thirty years before it washed up on Jimmy Ellsworth’s island shoreline as a rusted derelict, The Columbia was the Maine-built pride of the man credited with helping to jump-start one of New England’s largest modern fisheries. It was the last of a generation of wooden “draggers” that bridged the gap between the age of sail-powered fishing schooners and the rise of steel ships. Abandoned 90-foot fishing boat finally has an ownerThe two-year quest to determine the owner of the Columbia came to an end when Doug Wood, of Bremen, presented the bill of sale to the Bristol Harbor Committee Dec. 10. Wood informed the harbor committee he had received the bill of sale from the 90-foot fishing vessel’s last documented owner, Alan Curtis, of New Bedford, Mass. “Lo and behold, I am now the official owner of the Columbia,” Wood said.
