Blue Harvest doubles down on groundfish, after selling off scallop fleet
Blue Harvest Fisheries announced this week that it has purchased a new trawler, expanding its groundfish operations as the company sells off the last of its scallop fleet. The 91-foot trawler, originally called the Francis Dawn, will be renamed the Nobska. It replaces a different Blue Harvest vessel, also named the Nobska, which burned at sea in 2021. The charred and gutted vessel has been tied to the company’s dock on Herman Melville Boulevard in New Bedford ever since — declared a total loss at an estimated $2.4 million. >click to read< 07:18
F/V Nobska: Back-to-Back Hydraulic Hose Failures Caused Destructive Blaze
On April 30, 2021, while fishing for haddock at Georges Bank, the crew of the F/V Nobska spotted a fire on the lagging of the main engine’s exhaust pipe. After putting it out, they determined that the source of the fuel was a broken hydraulic hose located in a pipe tunnel, which ran between the wheelhouse and the engine room. The crew replaced the hydraulic hose and removed the oil-soaked lagging from the exhaust pipe, leaving the pipe bare. With the situation apparently resolved, they went back to fishing. Video: Coast Guard rescues 5 fishermen from F/V Nobska ablaze 85 miles east of Cape Cod
The Coast Guard rescued five mariners from a vessel fire 85 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Friday. At approximately 5 p.m. Coast Guard First District watchstanders received an EPIRB notification from the 100-foot trawler Nobska. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod crews were launched and when they arrived on scene the bow and wheelhouse of the vessel were engulfed in flames and all five Nobska crew members were on the stern. >click to read/watch< 11:15
Life aboard the New Bedford trawler Nobska
The workload is daunting for Geoff Hatfield and his crew on the New Bedford-based fishing boat, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. The captain, Geoff Hatfield, was busy on deck but said he had a few minutes. I (Mark Patinkin) climbed aboard and followed him up to the wheelhouse. His trawler is named the Nobska, and it’s a big one, at 90 feet. It’s been fishing for haddock, which is plentiful these days — on their last trip they came home with 72,000 pounds. Because of that, Hatfield brought an extra man for this trip to make a crew of six. They were below helping guide 30 tons of ice into the hold. As soon as that was done, the Nobska would be off on a 12-hour steam to Nantucket Shoals. That would put them there near midnight, bedtime in most worlds but not in fishing. Right away, they’d set the net for a two-hour tow, haul it back, empty it and set it out again — and on like that for five days. That’s how long they’d be gone. Hatfield is 57 and has been a captain more than 30 years, the last eight on the Nobska. Coast Guard rescues fisherman off Chatham
The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 38-year-old man from a fishing boat 50 miles east of Chatham early Sunday morning, according to a Coast Guard media release. The release stated that the captain of the fishing vessel Nobska contacted the Coast Guard shortly after midnight to report that a crewmember was experiencing respiratory problems.The Coast Guard launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter at 1:40 a.m. to respond, and evacuated the man from the Nobska at around 2:30 a.m., according to the release.
