New rules to tackle unlicensed commercial fishing in Guernsey
Regulations have been changed to protect commercial fishermen from unlicensed competition. It brings Guernsey in line with the UK. The States said it was important for the “ongoing viability and sustainability of the local industry”. Unlicensed fishermen will now be prevented from circumventing fishing rules following changes to regulations. Deputy Neil Inder, of the Committee for Economic Development, said it would stop “unfair competition”. Coronavirus: Fishermen cannot land their catch in France
The problem is not that boats are not able to land their catches, the issue is that restaurants in France, Italy and Spain have closed down, which has hit the demand for seafood. Fisherman Dougal Lane said it was very worrying. ‘The whole shellfish side of the industry has shut down, the crab and lobster boats, because the European market has crashed and, of course, the other market was China, so the market for shellfish has absolutely come to a standstill. >click to read< 10:04
Permits issued allowing French fishing boats to return to Bailiwick waters
Guernsey States says it is processing applications for the new system which will replace the The London Fisheries Convention that ended following Brexit. The new system will issue individual authorisation documents to French fishing vessels which choose to fish in Bailiwick waters in 2020. It will only apply during the Brexit Transition Period. Guernsey fishermen concerned about access to French waters after Brexit
Commercial fishermen in Guernsey say there is uncertainty over access to French waters after Brexit. When the UK left the EU on Friday, the London Fisheries Convention – which allowed French fishermen to access Bailiwick waters and vice versa – ended. Guernsey States has now introduced new regulation which it says will “ensure continuity of access for the remainder of 2020 for French vessels who previously fished in Bailiwick waters”. >click to read< 19:28
