Large land-based salmon farms face opposition in Maine
“There’s a lot of things wrong with this project,” said neighbour Ellie Daniels. “But one of the major [problems] is water use, the discharge. And then the carbon footprint is gigantic on these things.” Daniels said Nordic Aquafarms proposes to use 7.7 million gallons of water a day, 30 per cent fresh, and 70 per cent seawater. Belfast and Bucksport are separated by just 24 miles, and both are closely connected to the Penobscot River and Penobscot Bay.
