Small sizes temporarily closes shrimp seasons in Mississippi and Louisiana

louisiana shrimpThe Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is temporarily closing shrimping north of the Intracoastal Waterway in Mississippi waters at 6 a.m. on June 18. The closing will be in effect until MDMR sampling determines the shrimp count has reached the minimum legal size of 68 per pound. Captain loses commercial fishing license for 10 years for oyster violations; 2 crewmen fined

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says three Houma men are convicted of oyster violations, and the captain of the boat involved has lost his license for 10 years. Samuel Dobson, 35, also was sentenced to pay $1,654 in fines, serve a year on probation and perform 120 hours of community service. He lost his license for a third conviction for taking oysters from a polluted area, department spokesman Adam Einck said in an email Tuesday. Read the rest here 09:53

Three Louisiana men cited for commercial shark-fishing violations

Agents with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries cited three Louisiana men this weekend for alleged commercial shark-fishing violations off the coast of Grand Isle. According to a press release, Daie Minh Le, 42, of Buras, Hung Van Le, 38, of New Orleans and Thanh Van Le, 52, of Buras, were ticketed for being over the limit of large coastal sharks. Agents on patrol found the men still actively fishing and already in possession of 74 large coastal sharks, the release states. Most of the sharks were black tip sharks, as well as one hammerhead. LDWF Announces 2015 Derelict Crab Trap Cleanup; Volunteers Needed

The blue crab 2 was initiated by LDWF in 2004 to address removal of derelict and abandoned crab traps. In order to conduct the trap cleanups, licensed crab fishermen received a notice informing them that they must remove their crab traps from within the closure area during the closure period, and all remaining crab traps will be considered abandoned and may be removed by agency personnel or volunteers. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries – Seven accused of taking oysters illegally

Seven men were ticketed over the past month for taking oysters from public waters near Dularge while the harvesting season is closed, authorities said. Louisiana Fishermen happy for reopening of waters affected by oil spill

Rayne man arrested for theft and selling shrimp illegally

A Rayne man has bonded out of jail after being accused of shrimp violations by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. 36-year-old Shannon J Roche was charged with 13 counts of selling shrimp without a retail seafood license, three counts of theft by fraudulent sales, and failing to maintain records. BP objects to fisheries closure in Grand Terre – a 40,000-pound tar mat was unearthed in the surf just off the island.

Associated Press – Updated recreational landings data and new information from Louisiana and Texas  prompted the change, according to a release from NOAA Fisheries, part of the National  Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA Fisheries also raised the total allowed red snapper catch from 8 million  pounds to nearly 8.5 million pounds, with 51 percent for commercial boats and  the rest for anglers. continued
