MassDEP Fines F/V Capt Carl, LLC for Discharge of Oiled Bilge Water to New Bedford Harbor

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has assessed a $10,465 penalty to Trawler Capt. Carl, LLC of New Bern, North Carolina, for discharging oiled bilge water to the surface water of New Bedford Harbor near 4 Washington Street in Fairhaven. MassDEP’s surface water discharge regulations prohibit unpermitted discharges which are not incidental to the normal operation of a vessel. On May 5, 2022, MassDEP responded to the report of an oil spill in New Bedford Harbor off Fairhaven. Because a responsible party was not forthcoming, the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a publicly funded cleanup. Later investigation of Trawler Capt. Carl’s commercial fishing vessel in the immediate vicinity of the spill revealed a pronounced “bathtub ring” of oil within the vessel bilge, indicating that the oiled bilge water had recently been pumped out. >click to read< 13:49

Fairhaven Fire Department and Harbormaster responds to diesel fuel spill in harbor

The fishing vessel F/V Jack M reported an equipment malfunction that spilled an unknown quantity of diesel fuel into the harbor. The spill located at Union wharf extended as far North as the Seaport Inn and Marina. The spill impacted Fairhaven Shipyard, Blue Harvest Seafoods, Pease Park Boat Ramp, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Seaport Inn. The vessel’s owner is cooperating and has contracted with Frank Corp Environmental, located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to complete the cleanup. Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Coast Guard Pollution Control is investigating the cause of the malfunction.” >click to read< 07:11

Coast Guard hosts meeting to decrease oil spills in New Bedford harbor

The Coast Guard, Massachusetts’ Department of Environmental Protection, the New Bedford Harbor Development Council and the Fairhaven Harbormaster agreed that 95 percent of the oil pollution in the harbor is caused by about 5 percent of the vessels using it. For two hours Tuesday, the organizations led a meeting targeting those who illegally dump oil into the harbor. However, the fishermen who attended the meeting likely aren’t the ones polluting. “As soon as somebody gets caught and they get hit with the a fine, that’s going to turn some people’s heads,” Ed Anthes Washburn, director of the port and HDC, said. click here to read the story 08:50

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
