In considering the lobster, PETA only inflicts pain on itself

At least People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) makes things fun for its critics. The pro-vegetarian group yet again proved its incompetence this week by attempting to claim credit for a business decision it had nothing to do with, this one concerning a Minor League baseball team and what’s being served at its concession stands during games. The City of Portland owned Hadlock Field, home of the Portland Sea Dogs, won’t be serving lobster from Maine Lobster Processor Linda Bean any longer, because the concessionaire, whomever these narrow minded, under the PETA influence, executives are, have decided to consider PETA’s extremist views about lobster processing! This certainly is the “dumbing down” of the hospitality sector. Shame on the City of Portland to allow a local sustainable Maine food product harvested from the waters of the State of Maine to be ejected because a small group of the extremist fringe are offended. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
