Barge Arrives to Re-Float Fishing Boat After A Year Sunk Off Point Pleasant Beach

Just a few days shy of the one-year anniversary of the sinking of the Susan Rose, a 77-foot commercial fishing vessel that ran aground on the beach just feet south of the Manasquan Inlet – then sunk a bit farther offshore following a failed effort to tow it off the beach, has been re-floated and will eventually be removed and likely sold for scrap. Crews began staging equipment last week in the area about 3,000 feet off the beach in Point Pleasant Beach where the stricken vessel dipped below the waves and sunk to the bottom in under 100-feet of water. Rumors swirled for months about what would happen to the former commercial fishing trawler, owned by The Town Dock Inc. in Narragansett, R.I., but no action took place. Salvage operation under way after fishing vessel capsizes

Early on Sunday morning, the Saldanha Bay-registered vessel, the Restless Wave, capsized eight nautical miles south of Cape Point. It happened quickly, with the National Sea Rescue Initiative (NSRI) saying: “It is believed that the vessel capsized in under a minute.” The good news is that none of the 12 crew on board was injured and all were rescued by nearby boats. The bad news was that the vessel, with a fuel capacity of 45,000 litres, was stranded upside down, threatening marine life in a biodiverse and protected area. These initial fears are subsiding as the salvage operation comes to an end. >click to read< 15:32

Salvage operation for capsized fishing vessel off Cape Point

The 24m Restless Wave capsized in the early hours on Sunday, prompting the successful rescue of all 12 crew who were uninjured in the accident, which is being investigated. However, the upturned vessel is adrift close to Cape Point, raising concern about a possible pollution threat. On Tuesday Samsa said: “Earlier today salvors and port officials met to formalise the process to tow the vessel to Cape Town. A separate vessel is standing by to recover the fishing gear once the Restless Wave is connected and clear of the area.” The vessel is a purse seine fishing vessel built by local boat builder Tallie Marine for the local fishing industry. >click to read< 09:14

Ancient fishing vessel Reaper will sail south to Arbroath for repairs following salvage operation

The Reaper is upright again following a salvage operation after it keeled over on to its side in Johnshaven harbour on August 6. Canvas patches have been applied to the damaged side of the Fraserburgh-built vessel to keep the water out for her journey to Arbroath. John Firn, vice-chairman of the Anstruther-based Scottish Fisheries Museum, which owns the boat, said the Reaper will be out of commission for the rest of the year. He said: “It has been made waterproof and brought back to normality. The 70-foot Reaper, which dates back to 1902, keeled over with members of the public onboard at the Johnshaven Fish Festival. The strong gust of wind caught the sails and threw one of the six crew overboard on to the harbour floor. Read the rest here 16:30
