New campaign encourages fishermen to land catch in Shetland

Lerwick Port Authority and Shetland Islands Council – who run markets in Lerwick and Scalloway respectively – are behind the project. They said there are “clearly significant cost and carbon footprint savings” from landing in Shetland. More than half of all the fish landed in the UK comes from within 100 nautical miles of Shetland. The two fish markets in Shetland are relatively new, with both launching in 2020. Council to call for ban on gillnetting by larger boats

Shetland Islands Council is to write to the Scottish Government to request a ban on the use of gillnetting by boats over 15 metres in the country’s waters. It comes after a report on the controversial issue was brought to a meeting of the council’s development committee on Tuesday. A protest organised by the Fishing Forward UK group was held in Lerwick last month, and further action is planned in October. Is the fishing industry irrelevant to our governments?

Now our governments are auctioning off vast areas of valuable seabed to wind farm developers, with the apparent approval and encouragement of our own Shetland Islands Council. Proposed area’s presented for consideration when combined, would cover roughly half the area of the Scottish mainland.
