Fisherman tells of the moment his crew hauled in the wreckage of a missing German plane in their NET off the coast of Scotland
A fisherman has revealed the shocking moment he and his crew discovered the wreckage of a missing German plane more than 12 months after it disappeared. Benarkle II skipper, Mark Addison, hauled in a section of the Cessna 172’s fuselage while fishing on Friday and brought it to the Greenhead Base in Lerwick. The four-seater aircraft went missing after taking off from near Hamburg, Germany, with only the 62-year-old pilot on board on September 30, 2023. In Peterhead, a major port in northeast Scotland and Europe’s largest wholesale market for white fish, Brexit was supposed to offer “a sea of opportunity” for locals. Instead they have suffered a wave of complications and added financial costs in recent years, even before the impact of surging inflation. “Careful what you wish for, it hasn’t turned out as they promised,” Mark Addison says in front of his trawler, the Benarkle II, which is moored just behind Peterhead’s fish market. “It’s been the hardest three years,” he tells AFP. “Brexit followed by the (Ukraine) war was just a double whammy.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent prices soaring worldwide, with the fishing industry hit hard by rocketing fuel prices and large cost increases for key equipment such as nets. I rescued a bird at sea and now I’m getting called the Owl Whisperer
Michael Clark, 55, saved the struggling animal after he spotted it being terrorised by gulls. He took it onboard trawler Benarkle II, which is registered in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, where it was spoiled. After two days it was eating steak out of his hand but it caused an unexpected problem when it pooped all over the wheelhouse.
