Three generations of the Hamada family have fished British Columbia’s coast. Will the latest outlive the salmon they seek?
The Hamadas tell me this story on a November night in 2019 in their one-story home built by Satoshi, tucked away in the heart of Richmond, a city that borders Vancouver. They moved into the house five months after Dereck was born. Huddled around a kitchen table better suited for two people, Satoshi, Dereck, June, and I peer over fishing catch receipts, dated newspaper clippings, and black-and-white photographs scattered across the tabletop, illuminated by bright-white kitchen lights overhead. Our conversation was supposed to have happened at sea aboard the Three generations, the family boat built by Satoshi in 1967. Dereck and Satoshi had invited me to join them on a chum fishing trip to mark Satoshi’s 66 years of fishing on the BC coast. Jacksons Fisheries closes after three generations
Joe Jackson has been out on the boat fishing for the family business since he was 18-years-old, running the G.W. Jackson vessel, built by his grandfather George in 1963. After 32 years in the labour intensive industry of commercial fishing, Joe has decided to step away from Jackson Fisheries. His wife Tammy, who ran Jacksons Fish Market for 13 years, has also stepped away as potential buyers haven’t shown interest in keeping the market alive. Newfoundland fishing tragedy claims members from three generations of St. John’s family
Former NHLer Terry Ryan laughed through tears Wednesday, recalling how playing ball hockey with fishermen now lost off Newfoundland made him feel like the superstar he might have been. “I remember the first game, I got player of the game and they handed me a lobster,” said the 1995 first-round draft pick for the Montreal Canadiens. “They just loved the water. They loved fishing. They loved everything about it.” Ryan, who grew up in Mount Pearl, N.L., played ball hockey the last three years with commercial fisherman Keith Walsh and his buddy, Billy Humby. Both men, along with Keith’s son, Keith Walsh Jr., and his father Eugene Walsh were on board an open, seven-metre boat reported overdue Tuesday night before two bodies were recovered near St. John’s. PEI – Three generations of lobster fishing Jollimores
On an early spring morning in French River Jimmy Jollimore wakes to see the sunrise over New London Bay. He then heads down Jollimore Lane to the boat that will carry three generations of his family to the lobster grounds. “It goes back five generations, at least,” said Jimmy, who has 60 years of fishing in so far. “My grandfather, my father and myself. Two sons with gears of their own and one son here with me is three. Sons and grandsons. Brought up to be fishermen, I guess.” Read more here 21:11
